Okay, holy cow. 8.5 days without power and we’re back up. THANK YOU PSNH!!! And thank you for all the nice concerned emails I received. I didn’t get any of them until recently and am not going to be able to answer them individually since I will be without a computer for the holidays. So here I am thanking you all. And I *AM* really thankful for your concern! To answer the same question I got over and over (obviously from city dwellers) we did not have water because we have a well and the pump requires electricity to run. We did get water runoff every day for toilet flushing water, and my mum has town water so we filled up buckets for drinking over there. She did not have power either, though.
I have *SO* much to do since we’ve been down for a week and here the holidays are. so. you’re getting pictures of the storm straight out of camera with some cropping and sizing for blog only. Plus, some of the pictures were taken out the car windshield as I was driving, so please, if you could give me a little break that would be super. THANKS!
The winter wonderland that was NH…
I love how everything was encased in ice…so pretty.
We had lost power Thursday night. We ran right out Friday morning to check out the damage, so Oliver’s still in his jammies in all the pictures. I think the stripey pants really add to the pictures, don’t you? They match his hat and gloves anyway….
This is one of many trees down in our yard. This one, unlike the others, didn’t break — it pulled its roots right out of the ground.
One of MANY pictures of our drive. We have a LONG drive and the trees were drooping the entire way down. Oliver loves when this happens because it’s like driving through the carpet thing at the carwash. Of course all I can hear is the ice/trees scraping the entire way down the car.
Okay, still passable…
yes, this is the DRIVING part of our driveway.
yeah…we had to do some cutting before we could get out. Yes, this is still our driveway.
yup. still the drive.
STILL! This is actually the very edge of the driving part because Oliver couldn’t squeeze through the driving part. That would be the part on the left of the picture.
PHEW! We made it out to our road. This was the only stretch of road that had the power lines up. I’ll post road pics in a minute…
So later in the afternoon it stopped raining/icing and the sky turned this incredible shade of blue. With all the ice in the trees it was just the most beautiful thing. And crazy to still have no power and so much damage when it was such a nice day.
And the full moon that night was amazing. I wish I had the good sense to bring my tripod out, but seriously, I had only gone out to get wood for the fire and I was freezing my rear end off. I didn’t want to spend too much time out there… Moon pic with a couple tree branches in the way, but pretty clear.
I couldn’t decide between these two pictures. I think it’s hard to tell that this one is the moon, but I love that you can see all the sparkly ice from the brilliant moonlight in this one.
Day 3 we trekked over to my friend Wendy’s house Sunday morning to shower (we were RANK! It was the best shower I think I’ve ever had!) and then meet them to see Santa arrive in a fire truck in the middle of Milford. They had hot cocoa and Oliver and I had some pizza for lunch. It was a nice break from our powerless home. Oliver didn’t want to see Santa, but he did want to see his friend. She wore all green…oh be still his beating heart!
I love the chairs in the pizza place. I’d love one for a photoshoot sometime…RED CHAIRS!
On the way home and then on the way out on Monday I thought to take pictures of some of the damage to our road. I’d be driving along to find the random power line dangling mid road. We had all these bright orange signs around the power lines at either end “DO NOT ENERGIZE.” Thankful for those because it made the road passable. I’m not sure what we would have done if we couldn’t get out — we certainly didn’t have enough water to last 8 days. This is the Brookline end of the road and it looked a little better than the dirt road half.

Prior to the storm Oliver and I *DID* finish up the Christmas decorations at my mum’s. Thanks to those of you who inquired by email. Here Oliver is putting the angel on top of the tree.

I don’t know what it was this Christmas, but Oliver was putting EVERYTHING on his head and it was cracking me up. Y’all have already seen the stocking on his head. This is some little wreath thing that goes around a candle. The picture just makes me laugh every time I look at it. What a goofball.
If you made it to the end of the post, right on ya! Thanks for sticking with me. I know now everyone celebrates a holiday, and some celebrate different holidays. I totally respect that. I do think that this is a nice time of year to appreciate what you have and love your family — that’s what the holidays really means to me. I come from a mixed religion family myself and whatever you celebrate, it’s nice to celebrate family (the kind that’s related or the kind you make with friends!) I am thankful that I am so rich in that regard. Happy Holidays to all of you! Sweet dreams!
